I maintain an open-source peer-to-peer file-sharing project that has reached about 200 stars. It currently runs on Azure through a one-year student credit, but that benefit will expire soon, so I'm looking for a free or sponsored alternative for the backend. I already have a sponsor button and a sponsorship page, although the project is mainly a hobby and I'm not expecting much financial support. Are there hosting providers that offer free credits or hosting for open-source projects? I thought DigitalOcean used to have a program, but I'm not sure whether it still does.

Make sure the project’s support options are easy to discover by keeping the sponsor button enabled and adding a FUNDING.yml file. For hosting, Oracle Cloud’s free tier can handle a surprisingly capable backend, while Netlify or similar services can cover a frontend at no cost. The main obstacle with Oracle is often getting through account verification, especially if your payment card isn’t accepted.
Vultr has offered a fairly straightforward open-source sponsorship program. I applied by linking the repository and explaining how the infrastructure was being used, and received a useful amount of credit a few days later. The details may have changed, but it’s definitely worth checking.
Thanks, I’ll look into that. Do you remember roughly how much credit you received, and how large or popular your project was at the time?
Several providers have open-source credit programs, including Railway, Render, and Fly. Netlify and Vercel may also offer open-source plans when the frontend qualifies, though backend-heavy projects can be harder to fit into those programs. You’ll usually need to apply rather than wait for the provider to discover the project. To make credits last longer, keep preview and staging environments on cheaper infrastructure and automatically stop idle services on a schedule.
I mainly need Vercel for the frontend; the backend is the part that really needs an open-source sponsorship. I’ve already received some other helpful sponsorships, including extended Claude access and documentation support from Mintlify.

I already have a sponsor button and a sponsorship page, though the project is mostly something I built for myself and shared because I find it useful. I tried Oracle Cloud, but its signup and payment-card verification were too strict for me.
