What can I explore with Linux that I couldn’t easily do on Windows?

I just installed Linux for the first time and chose Xubuntu because I'm new to this whole area and want to learn more about computers. What useful, interesting, or practical things should I try that Linux makes easier or more flexible than Windows? I'm especially interested in beginner-friendly projects and features I can experiment with safely. My hardware is older, so I may switch to Linux Mint, but I understand that the transition from Windows should still be fairly straightforward.

Start with the basics: explore the desktop settings, install programs through the official software manager, and learn a few terminal commands. Linux gives you a lot of control over how the desktop looks, which services run, and when updates happen. You can eventually try different desktop environments or kernels, but it’s probably best to keep things simple until you’re comfortable.

Linux is particularly useful for data recovery. A live USB can often boot even when a Windows installation is having trouble, and tools such as ddrescue can copy data from a failing drive while minimizing additional damage. Just be careful not to write to the damaged drive, and make a backup before experimenting.

For compatibility, check the Additional Drivers utility for hardware such as graphics cards rather than downloading random driver packages. If you need to run some Windows-only applications, Wine may help, although compatibility varies and it can take a little configuration. Many common programs already have native Linux versions, so check the official software repositories first.

Wine isn’t something you need to install immediately. It’s better to start with native applications and only use Wine when you have a specific Windows program that needs it.
