How can I connect my MacBook Air to a standard HDMI monitor?

I'm trying to hook up an external monitor to my MacBook Air from 2017, but I mistakenly ordered a mini HDMI adapter instead of one that fits a standard HDMI port (Type A). I've searched everywhere for a Thunderbolt to standard HDMI adapter, but no luck at all! Is there a specific reason why these adapters usually come in mini sizes? Am I completely out of options here?

Just a heads up, Thunderbolt is a type of data interface but it usually uses a USB-C port. That's why you might struggle to find specific 'Thunderbolt to XXX' adapters. Your Mac likely has a Mini DisplayPort with Thunderbolt 2. Search for an HDMI female to Mini DisplayPort male adapter—you should definitely find what you need that way!

It’s a totally different port from the USB port. It’s smaller.
