Getting Started with an Online Store: Builder vs. Custom Site

Hey everyone! I'm looking to start an online store but I'm a bit hesitant to invest a lot of money right away since I'm not sure how successful it will be. I'm considering using a site builder at first, and if things go well, I might hire a designer for a more polished site later. Can I transfer a site made with a builder to a custom site later, or would a designer have to start from scratch? Is this a reasonable approach? Also, I've heard that hiring a professional can help with optimization—do you think that's worth it at the beginning?

Additionally, if I decide to hire someone, what steps can I take to protect myself from issues like them mishandling payment or customer information? And if I'm unhappy with their work, how can I revoke their access to the site? What other concerns should I keep in mind? Thanks so much for your help!

Most developers are trustworthy and won’t do the shady things you're worried about. However, if you build on a site builder, your developer might have to recreate it from scratch, which can be costly. If you want a free site build, I can help! You’d just need to cover hosting costs, so it’s low-risk for you. Let me know if you're interested!

If you're just experimenting, I'd recommend starting with a platform like WordPress or Shopify. Once you hire someone to design your store, you can always change the password to limit their access later. If things go well, you can then think about custom development from scratch!

Okay, thank you!

Just a heads up, I personally prefer clean code over the drag-and-drop style some site builders use. It’s usually better for optimization and maintenance in the long run.
