Hey everyone! My boss just got a new computer, and it has an option to transfer data from her old one. We're a bit confused about a couple of things: will it automatically install all her current programs from the old computer? Also, can she choose which files she wants to move? We typically use an old version of Microsoft Office, and she heard there's a one-time purchase option for Microsoft Office that includes four programs for around $150, instead of the ongoing cost of Office 365. Is that actually true? I'm sorry if these seem like basic questions, but I don't deal with these things regularly. Thanks a lot for your help!

So, it sounds like you might be referring to Windows' built-in migration tools. If it’s an HP Omnibook running Windows, it likely has this feature. However, to keep everything smooth, you may want to check which version you’re using. If your old machine was running Windows 10 or 11, you could even swap the hard drives to keep your software environment intact. But that might be more than you're looking to handle, I totally get that! As for Microsoft Office, they do offer one-time versions like Office 2019 or later that you can buy as a boxed copy — typically around $150 to $250 depending on the retailer. Just make sure whatever version you get will work with your new system!
To clarify about the migration, yes, you can transfer files selectively depending on the method you choose. Windows usually works best for moving personal files rather than installed software, which can be trickier. For migrating software, it’s often easier to reinstall them fresh on the new machine. As for Office, definitely check for those boxed versions that are one-time purchases; it's a great way to avoid ongoing subscription fees!
Got it! I guess reinstalling is the way to go for software then. I’ll definitely look into the boxed versions!
Thanks for the info! Swapping hard drives sounds complicated, but I appreciate the clarity on the Office options!
