Why won’t my new 240Hz monitor go beyond 144Hz?

Hey everyone! I recently picked up a new 240Hz monitor that has a 1440p resolution, but I can only get it to run at 144Hz when I connect it to my laptop. My laptop features a 165Hz display, and it's equipped with an i7 13th gen CPU and an RTX 4050 GPU. I'm using an HDMI 2.1 cable to connect to the monitor, but it only has a HDMI 2.0b port. I'm hoping to figure out what I need to do to achieve 240Hz output. Any advice?

You definitely want to switch to DisplayPort if possible. Also, check if your laptop has any overclocking settings for the display. Many laptops with USB-C can output DisplayPort via the GPU, so that should work!

Can you break it down a bit? I’m not sure I follow.

It looks like the issue is with the HDMI 2.0b port on your monitor, which can't handle 240Hz at 1440p. Even though your laptop has HDMI 2.1, it's limited by the monitor's port. If your monitor has DisplayPort inputs, that’s the way to go for 240Hz. Also, check if your laptop supports video output over USB-C; if it does, you can use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable for better results!

Thanks for the tip! I do have Thunderbolt 4 on my laptop, so I guess I can use that to connect to DisplayPort.
