How Do Self-Taught Developers Level Up to Senior Positions?

I'm curious about the path self-taught developers and bootcamp graduates take to reach senior or staff engineer roles. Do they typically spend a couple of weeks just reading documentation and then dive into building projects? I've been watching YouTube tutorials, but I often feel like I miss out on some foundational knowledge that limits my ability to connect the dots and create a solid codebase. Documentation can be really dense and filled with complex language, so it would be great if there were AI tools that could simplify that information in real-time. How do these developers learn and grow their skills?

I’ve broken things and read tons of dull material over the years. That's been my journey of learning, and I'm still at it every day!

I just try to create things, using what I know and Googling whenever I hit a wall. I rarely use boilerplate or frameworks. I prefer to dissect code instead of watching tutorials!

Yeah, I've been self-taught and that’s exactly what I did—just built stuff! You also need a bit of luck and the right opportunities to showcase your skills.

I’m teaching myself HTML/CSS and just started with JavaScript. It’s a challenge, but I know it takes time and practice to reach a professional level.

After 13 years self-taught, I now work as a Senior Consultant. I brainstorm ideas, figure out how to build them, and refine my projects continuously. It’s all about learning through real-world applications!

Learning is definitely all about practice! Just like any other skill, the more you code and build, the better you'll get.
