Amazon Connect won’t let me claim a UK phone number

I'm following an Amazon Connect tutorial on personalized routing and am stuck at the "Claim a phone number" step. When I choose the United Kingdom and try either a toll-free number or a DID, Connect reports: "The allowed limit for claimed phone numbers has been exceeded for your instance."

The phone numbers page shows no numbers at all, and I'm fairly sure this personal development account only has one Connect instance with no other claimed numbers. I also thought new instances included one phone number by default. What could be causing this, and how can I get a number claimed?

This error can appear even when the instance has never claimed a number. Account-level restrictions, fraud-prevention checks, or an incorrectly applied quota can trigger it. Opening a support case is usually the fix; include the Connect instance ID and the region where you need the number enabled.

My account was several years old and I still ran into the same issue, so it doesn’t seem limited to brand-new accounts. Support was able to clear it after some back-and-forth.

Request a quota review or increase for the phone-numbers-per-instance limit. Explain that this is for a development tutorial and provide the instance details and requested country or region. This happened to another account recently, and support resolved it after the request was submitted.

Thanks, I’ll open a quota support case and include those details.

If you only need a number to test the tutorial, trying another region may be a temporary workaround because quotas and provisioning can be region-specific. However, support is still the proper solution if you specifically need a UK number.

Some regions, including the United Kingdom, may not be enabled automatically for number claiming. Contact support with the instance ID and the region you want to use. They can usually enable the region or remove the restriction within a few hours, although timing can vary.
