I'm putting together a new gaming PC focused on high-end 1440p gaming, while still trying to keep the total cost reasonable. I already picked up an unopened Ryzen 7 9800X3D for $325, but I haven't purchased the other components yet and can wait for sales before building.

- CPU cooler: ASUS TUF Gaming LC III 360 ARGB White Edition
- Power supply: MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5, 850W, 80+ Gold, fully modular, ATX 3.1
- Case: White ATX case, not chosen yet
I'd appreciate feedback on overall compatibility, whether the B650 motherboard is a suitable match for the 9800X3D, what RAM speed and timings I should target, and whether the 850W PSU is appropriate. I'd also like to avoid clearance problems involving the 360mm radiator, graphics card, and whichever case I choose. Finally, are there any parts you would replace for better value or reliability?

The motherboard is compatible, but depending on when it was manufactured, it may need a BIOS update before it will boot with the 9800X3D. Check for a BIOS Flashback feature and update it with a USB drive if necessary. The memory speed and timings weren’t listed, so aim for DDR5-6000 CL30 if the price is reasonable. DDR5-6000 CL36 or DDR5-5600 CL36 can also be perfectly usable if they are substantially cheaper. The 850W PSU provides plenty of upgrade headroom; the system does not need anywhere near that much power. Radiator clearance cannot be confirmed until you choose a case, so check its supported radiator locations and maximum GPU length, especially if you mount the AIO at the front. Since you’re still shopping, compare actual prices before deciding whether any component is good value.
The overall build should work well, but the 360mm ASUS liquid cooler is probably more expensive than necessary for a 9800X3D. That processor is quite efficient, so a good air cooler such as a Thermalright Phantom Spirit would be enough and could save a significant amount. If you prefer the appearance of an AIO, a less expensive model would still be reasonable. Just confirm that the memory kit is DDR5-6000 with around CL30 timings; that is generally the best value and performance target for AM5. The 850W power supply is more than sufficient for this setup.
That makes sense. I’ll compare less expensive AIOs since I do like the look, even if I don’t strictly need liquid cooling.
If switching to a less expensive air cooler would free enough money for an RX 9070 XT, that could be a stronger gaming upgrade than spending heavily on a premium 360mm AIO. It’s worth checking current sale prices before locking in the cooler.
Unfortunately, changing the cooler alone wouldn’t be enough to fit the XT model into my budget, but I’ll still keep an eye on GPU and cooler deals.
I haven’t bought the other parts yet, so I’ll compare prices and wait for worthwhile sales before finalizing the list. The 9800X3D was the only purchase so far, at $325.
