I'm looking to upgrade an NZXT prebuilt I bought around 2021 while keeping the budget between $400 and $600. My current system has an Intel Core i5-10400F, RTX 3060 12GB, 32GB DDR4-3200 memory, a 512GB SSD, a 2TB hard drive, a basic B560 motherboard, and a generic 500W power supply. Most games run around 60–100 FPS at 1080p on medium settings, but newer titles such as Forza and Subnautica 2 become stuttery and run poorly when I raise settings. I suspect the CPU is limiting performance because the RTX 3060 generally meets recommended GPU requirements, while the i5-10400F is often listed as the minimum. I'd like to reuse my DDR4 RAM, but I believe I'll need a new motherboard and power supply with any meaningful CPU upgrade. I'm open to either Intel or AMD and would appreciate the best value upgrade path.

An Intel 12th- or 13th-generation CPU with a DDR4 motherboard is another option. A Core i5-12400F or 12600K/12600KF paired with a B660, B760, or suitable Z-series DDR4 board can be a good value, though the 5700X3D is generally the more attractive gaming upgrade if pricing is close. Don’t spend heavily on a motherboard with features you won’t use; prioritize a solid VRM, the storage connections you need, and a quality 650W power supply. Keep the 32GB RAM and RTX 3060 unless testing shows one of them is actually the bottleneck.
Before buying parts, check GPU utilization, CPU utilization, individual CPU-core usage, temperatures, and RAM usage while the stuttering happens. If the GPU is near 95–100%, the graphics card is the limit and a CPU upgrade won’t help much. If GPU usage drops while one or more CPU cores are maxed out, then a processor and platform upgrade makes sense. Also check whether the games are installed on the hard drive, since moving them to the SSD can reduce loading-related stutter.
For a gaming-focused upgrade while keeping DDR4, an AM4 setup with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D and a good B550 motherboard is worth considering if you can find reasonable prices. It offers a large improvement in CPU-limited games and lets you reuse your memory. Pair it with a reliable 650W power supply from a reputable brand. The RTX 3060 can stay for now, and you can upgrade the graphics card later. Make sure the motherboard BIOS supports the processor and that your CPU cooler is adequate.
Most older games run fine, but newer ones are where I notice the problem. I’ll monitor GPU usage and per-core CPU usage before deciding.
