I'm building my first PC and I'm wondering whether DDR4 and DDR5 RAM can be installed in the same motherboard. Would mixing the two memory types cause any problems, or are they compatible with each other?

No—DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically different. Their slots have different notch positions, and normal motherboards are designed for one memory standard or the other, not both. You’ll need to choose the type supported by your motherboard and processor.
Make sure you buy RAM that matches the motherboard’s specifications. DDR4 kits can still be a good, affordable choice, while DDR5 is supported by newer platforms, but the two standards aren’t interchangeable.
There is at least one unusual motherboard with slots for both DDR4 and DDR5, but even that design can only use one type at a time. DDR4 and DDR5 cannot be combined in the system simultaneously, so this isn’t a practical upgrade path.
