Can AI Be an Effective Tutor for Learning Programming?

Use AI as a tutor rather than as the programmer. Build the project yourself, then ask questions such as “Why doesn’t this work?”, “Explain the error without fixing it,” or “Give me a hint instead of the answer.” Having it ask you questions about your code can be useful, but asking it to generate a large program and then explain it may create the illusion that you understand more than you can reproduce.

A good way to avoid becoming dependent on AI is to tell it not to provide complete solutions. Ask it to check your current understanding, point out missing concepts, explain errors, or guide you toward the answer. Even then, treat its responses skeptically and verify important details with documentation, since it can confidently give incorrect explanations.

Learning through a small project is a solid idea, and AI can be a helpful discussion partner for comparing approaches or reviewing your solution. Just make sure the project includes plenty of unaided practice. If you can only understand code when the AI is explaining it, but cannot start or debug a program yourself, you need more hands-on work.

Your idea can work if AI is only one part of the process. Spend most of your time reading reliable learning materials and writing code without assistance. Try to understand code on your own before asking for an explanation, and consider reviewing what you built with AI after each session rather than depending on it while writing every line.
