I'm building my first PC and already have an RTX 3080 that my dad gave me after upgrading. I have roughly £600 left for the rest of the system. I mainly play Counter-Strike and other games at 1440p on a 144Hz monitor. Is £600 enough for a balanced build, and which parts should I prioritize? Should I build now with older DDR4 hardware or save for a larger budget and a newer platform?

For your budget, an AM4/DDR4 build makes more sense than a new DDR5 system. Current DDR5 and SSD prices can consume a large part of the budget, while a Ryzen 5 5600 or similar processor is plenty for Counter-Strike and most games when paired with a 3080. You can always upgrade to a faster AM4 processor later if you need more gaming performance.
Check second-hand marketplaces and local retailers for deals on DDR4 memory, a B550 motherboard, and a 1TB SSD. Since you already have a 1440p 144Hz monitor and the GPU, there’s no urgent reason to wait unless you specifically want a newer upgrade path. Build around the games you actually play, and make sure the case has good airflow.
Work out the power requirements before buying a PSU. The 3080 can draw substantial power, so choose a reputable unit with enough wattage and the correct PCIe connectors rather than trying to save money there. You also don’t need extremely fast RAM for this platform; decent DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600 is a better match than paying extra for very high speeds.
£600 should be enough when you already have the graphics card. Since the RTX 3080 is still very capable at 1440p, spend the budget on the platform rather than another GPU. A Ryzen 5 5600 with a B550 motherboard, 16GB or 32GB of DDR4, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a suitable power supply, and an airflow-focused case would make a solid starting point. Used DDR4 and storage can help keep the cost down.
If you find a good deal, an X3D Ryzen chip can improve gaming performance, but don’t overspend on it at the expense of the power supply, storage, or memory. A regular Ryzen 5 5600 is the sensible value choice.
