My Fractal Terra case has separate internal cables for its front USB 3.2 Gen 1 and Gen 2 ports. Unfortunately, the motherboard I bought only has one USB 3.x Gen 1 header and one USB 2.0 header. Can I use an adapter to connect the front USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable to the motherboard's USB 2.0 header? I understand it would operate at USB 2.0 speeds, which is fine for devices such as a keyboard or controller. Are the connectors and pinouts compatible enough for this, or would the adapter only work in the opposite direction?

You can find adapters for both types of motherboard header. Just choose one specifically made to connect the case’s internal Type-E/front USB-C cable to a USB 2.0 header. The port will be limited to USB 2.0, but basic peripherals should work normally. The faster USB 3.x cable should still connect to your motherboard’s Gen 1 header separately.
Adapters for this do exist. The internal USB-C front-panel connector is commonly called a Type-E header, and there are adapters that connect it to either a USB 2.0 header or a USB 3.x internal header. A USB 2.0 adapter should let the port function, but only at USB 2.0 speeds and power limits.
That was the part I wasn’t sure about—I found conflicting information about whether the conversion works in both directions. As long as the USB 2.0 header can drive the front port at reduced speed, that should be sufficient for my use.
