I'm playing FIFA 23 on a PS5, while my friend has the game on a PS4 in South America. Can we play online together even though we're using different console generations and are located in different countries?

Different countries are usually less of an issue than the console versions and internet connection. If both players use the same game version, newer titles should generally allow online play, although a long-distance connection may still add some delay or lag.
Not with the native PS5 version against the PS4 version. To play together, the person on the PS5 would generally need to install and launch the PS4 edition of the game. Your locations shouldn’t automatically prevent matchmaking, but the distance can cause noticeable lag for whoever isn’t hosting. Also, make sure the game’s online services are still active, since older sports titles eventually lose online support.
That makes sense. If we both had PS5 consoles and a newer game using the same version, would the connection usually be playable?
