My powerline adapter uses a three-prong plug, and the nearby wall outlet doesn't have enough room for both plugs because they're fairly bulky. Is it safe to connect a surge protector to the powerline adapter, assuming it has a pass-through outlet, or should I run an extension cable to a different outlet instead?

If the plugs are simply too large to fit side by side, don’t force a stacked or improvised connection. Use another outlet or a suitable, properly rated extension cable, and keep high-power devices off the same setup as the powerline adapter.
If the adapter has a built-in pass-through outlet, it may physically work, but I’d avoid plugging a surge protector into it unless the manufacturer specifically says that setup is supported. The pass-through outlet and adapter have power limits, and putting high-load equipment there could create an overload or overheating risk. Running a properly rated extension cable to another wall outlet is the safer option.
That was my concern, so I decided not to connect them and used longer cables to reach another outlet instead.
