Is it technically possible to create a hybrid Linux setup where the operating system keeps its normal Unix-style internals, but the file manager presents storage as lettered drives such as C: and D:? I'm also wondering whether applications could be installed into their own drive-like folders containing most of their binaries, libraries, and other files, similar to how many Windows programs keep their components together. I'd like the convenience and organization of that model without changing Linux's core behavior.

Linux distributions generally follow the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. Programs may place binaries, libraries, documentation, icons, and desktop files in different standard directories, so installing everything into one arbitrary folder can break package management and discovery tools. You could create your own packaging system or compile software with a custom installation prefix, but it would be incompatible with much of the normal Linux ecosystem and require extra maintenance.
You can install software under locations such as /opt/appname or /usr/local/appname and put a small launcher in /usr/local/bin. This works best for programs you build or manage yourself. The bigger challenge is isolation: ordinary Linux applications can still access other parts of the filesystem, and system-wide resources such as libraries, icons, man pages, and desktop entries rely on standard search paths.
For self-contained applications, AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap are closer to what you’re describing. AppImages can usually be copied anywhere and run as a single file, while Flatpak and Snap provide more isolation and bundle or manage application dependencies. They don’t change Linux into a drive-letter system, but they avoid scattering as much application-specific content through the system.
Containers and Linux namespaces can provide stronger application isolation without running a full virtual machine. They can give an application its own view of the filesystem and restrict what it can access. The trade-off is added complexity, and applications may need explicit permissions or special integration to access files, devices, and system services.
You can approximate drive letters by mounting partitions at paths such as /c or /d, or by creating symlinks with those names. Linux can also mount separate disks or partitions at directories like /home, /opt, or /mnt/storage. However, drive letters are only naming conventions; Linux programs still expect the normal filesystem hierarchy.
