Can Linux Make a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro Useful for Steam Gaming?

I have an older MacBook Pro that no longer receives modern operating system updates, and many applications are becoming unavailable. I'm considering installing Linux to give it a second life. Would Linux work well on this machine, and could it run at least some Steam games? The system is a 13-inch Mid-2012 MacBook Pro with a 2.5 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 16 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, and Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics.

A KDE-based setup can also work well on this generation of MacBook. I’ve seen similar older systems run Fedora with KDE, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, even with much less memory. Just keep expectations realistic for demanding 3D games.

Linux should work well on that hardware, especially with 16 GB of RAM. Fedora Workstation is a solid choice, and GNOME should run comfortably. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may need a little setup on Mac hardware, but they’re generally manageable.

Fedora is a good balance between newer software and stability. Debian or Linux Mint would also be reasonable if you prefer something more conservative or beginner-friendly. Since this is older Mac hardware, trying a few distributions from a USB drive before installing is a good idea.

Installing Linux can definitely make the laptop useful again for browsing, writing, media, and other everyday tasks. The main limitation is gaming: the dual-core processor and Intel HD 4000 graphics are too weak for most modern Steam games, though older, lightweight, or 2D games should be worth trying.
