My Windows 11 installation worked normally for about a year. Around two weeks ago, a relative used an unofficial product key or activation method to activate it. An invalid or unofficial product key by itself should not cause Windows to blue-screen. Microsoft generally responds to activation problems with notifications or limited personalization, not a boot failure. The crash was more likely caused by a corrupted update, driver, damaged system files, or an intermittent hardware issue.
If your relative only entered a key in Windows activation settings, it is very unlikely to be related. However, if they downloaded and ran an unofficial activation tool, that program could have modified system files or included malware, so it is worth treating that as a separate risk and reinstalling from official Windows installation media.
The most useful evidence would have been the crash dump. If any files remain, check C:WindowsMinidump for .dmp files. Those logs can identify the driver or component involved, although reinstalling Windows may have removed the original evidence.
