Dell PowerEdge R750xs Is Extremely Slow and Rebooting Daily Despite New SSDs and a Clean Windows Server Install

I'm troubleshooting a Dell PowerEdge R750xs that has become extremely slow, frequently freezes, and unexpectedly shuts down or restarts about once a day. Windows reports the shutdowns as unplanned. The chassis also has amber warning LEDs near the power supply and drive-bay areas.

So far, I've replaced the original hard drives with brand-new SSDs, performed a clean installation of Windows Server 2025, updated the Windows drivers, and reviewed the storage-controller configuration. None of that changed the behavior. There are no virtual machines running yet. What hardware and firmware checks should I perform to identify the cause?

This sounds more like a hardware or firmware issue than an operating-system issue. Check both power supplies, RAM, CPU and system temperatures, the wall outlet, and any UPS or PDU involved. Also update the BIOS, lifecycle-controller firmware, storage-controller firmware, backplane firmware, and drive firmware—not just the Windows drivers. Review the server’s hardware and system event logs for errors around the time of each restart.

I had been focusing on the software because the RAM and drives were recently replaced, but I’ll check the power components and the hardware logs as well.

Check the BIOS system profile and Windows power plan. Set the server to a maximum-performance profile rather than Balanced, then retest. This probably won’t explain an amber hardware warning by itself, but an aggressive power-saving profile or outdated firmware can contribute to poor performance on some PowerEdge systems.

The storage controller may be panicking or losing communication with the backplane. Look for controller resets, virtual-disk errors, predictive-failure alerts, and link events in the management logs. Replacing the SSDs won’t fix a failing RAID controller, cache module, cable, or backplane. Since no virtual machines are running, VM workload issues are unlikely to be the cause here.

Don’t rely on Shutdown Event Tracker alone; it only confirms that Windows did not complete a normal shutdown. Compare the Windows System event log with the server’s out-of-band hardware log. If the machine disappears or resets without a useful Windows error, hardware, firmware, power, or controller faults become much more likely than a clean-install problem.

Start by identifying exactly what the amber indicator means instead of treating it as a Windows problem. Use the server’s management controller and Dell OpenManage to inspect the hardware health log. A drive-bay amber light can indicate a failed or failing drive, a backplane problem, or a SAS/SATA link fault. The management logs should also show whether the warning is related to storage, power, temperature, or another component.
