I'm planning to upgrade my PC for older games and console emulation, but I made a careless mistake while checking the case. With the computer still powered on, I opened the back panel and briefly touched the back of the motherboard near the RAM slots. The contact lasted only a fraction of a second. I had touched metal beforehand, my hand was dry, and there was no spark, zap, shutdown, glitch, or other unusual behavior. The computer is still working normally, though I'm checking Event Viewer and running a memory test. How likely is it that I caused damage that might only appear later, particularly to the motherboard, RAM, or storage drives?

For future upgrades, turn the computer off, switch off the power supply, unplug it, and press the power button once to discharge the system. Touching the case before working is a reasonable precaution, but it doesn’t make working inside a powered computer completely safe. Since this incident caused no interruption, a normal memory test and regular use are enough.
There’s no need to worry about delayed damage based on what you described. Powered-on contact can be risky if it creates a short or involves a metal object, but a brief touch with a dry finger that caused no immediate symptoms is very unlikely to have affected the RAM, SSDs, or motherboard. Just shut the system down and unplug it before opening the case in the future, and avoid touching components unnecessarily.
If the PC stayed on and everything is behaving normally, you almost certainly didn’t damage anything. A fingertip normally won’t harm a motherboard, especially if there was no static discharge, spark, shutdown, or visible malfunction. You’re probably just overthinking it.
That’s reassuring. I was mainly worried that the RAM or SSDs could have been weakened even though the computer still works.
