This is my first iPhone after years of using inexpensive Android phones, and I've already dropped it several times—usually while rushing out the door or trying to grab it with my hands full. Since it cost much more than my old phones, I'm looking for better protection. I've been considering slim TORRAS Air-style cases because I don't want to carry something huge and heavy, but I keep seeing "military-grade" protection claims and I'm not sure how meaningful they are. Has anyone had good luck with a relatively slim case after repeated accidental drops?

“Military grade” is mostly a marketing phrase by itself. It doesn’t tell you much unless the manufacturer explains the actual drop testing and design. Look for raised edges around the screen and cameras, grippy sides, corner cushioning, and a case that fits tightly instead of relying on the label.
More protection usually means some added bulk, since the case needs material to absorb impact. A case such as the OtterBox Commuter line is a reasonable middle ground between a very slim case and a huge rugged one.
I’ve used a Spigen Tough Armor for years. It is somewhat thicker than a basic silicone case, but the extra grip and structure actually make the phone easier to hold, which may help prevent some drops in the first place.
I wouldn’t put much faith in the military wording either. A fully enclosed case with a built-in screen protector, like the older LifeProof-style designs now associated with OtterBox, offers strong protection for people who drop their phones often. They can be thicker, but some replacement programs may also help if the case gets badly damaged.
That makes sense. I’m willing to add some protection, but I’d rather not carry a bulky case every day if I can avoid it.
