I'm planning to update the BIOS on my ASUS TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS D4 from version 2004 to the latest version, 4505. One earlier BIOS release notes that Intel ME firmware should first be updated to version 16.1.25.1885 using the Intel ME Update Tool, while later releases say the BIOS update will also update Intel ME to version 16.1.30.2307. Do I need to install the separate Intel ME update tool first, or can I update directly to the latest BIOS?

If a specific intermediate BIOS version is required, ASUS normally calls that out clearly in the release notes. Otherwise, you can generally update directly to the latest BIOS rather than installing every version in between. Afterward, verify the Intel ME firmware version in the BIOS or with ASUS’s utility; the BIOS update may update it automatically.
The important thing is to follow any bold or mandatory upgrade warning in the BIOS notes. If version 4505 does not require a particular starting version, you should be able to install it directly. The separate ME update tool is mainly relevant when ASUS explicitly requires it or when the BIOS update does not bring the firmware up to the needed version.
