I'm planning to reinstall Windows, but I may install it on a different drive than the one currently running the system. That other drive already contains files I want to keep. Do I need to completely wipe or format the drive first, or can I install Windows without deleting its existing data?

If you’re reinstalling Windows on the same drive and don’t need to preserve its files, the Reset this PC option can be simpler. For a fresh install on another drive, just make sure you identify the correct drive and don’t erase partitions that contain data you want to keep.
You don’t need to wipe the drive in advance. During a USB installation, select the correct target drive and use unallocated space for Windows. Be extremely careful not to delete or format partitions containing files you want to keep. Back up anything important first, since choosing the wrong partition can erase its data.
If you want a completely clean installation, delete the partitions on the target drive from the Windows installer and let it recreate them. That permanently removes the data on that drive, so copy anything important elsewhere beforehand. A full secure wipe is only needed if you’re trying to prevent old data from being recovered, such as before selling the drive.
It’s a good idea to temporarily disconnect the old Windows drive during installation, if possible. Otherwise, the installer may place boot files on the wrong drive, which can cause the computer to depend on the old drive or boot the previous installation. Afterward, reconnect it and choose the new Windows drive in the firmware boot settings if needed.
Windows can be installed with an existing partition layout; the drive doesn’t necessarily have to be completely empty. You only need to remove partitions if you’re intentionally erasing everything on that drive.
