Do I need to wipe a drive before installing Windows on it?

If the drive already has files you want to keep, don’t delete its partitions. Windows needs suitable unallocated space or a partition it can use, so you may need to shrink the existing partition first. Be extremely careful during setup to select the intended drive.

Installing Windows on a second drive can leave boot files on both drives, which may cause the computer to start from the wrong installation. For a cleaner setup, disconnect the old Windows drive during installation if possible, then reconnect it afterward. A full wipe still isn’t required unless you’re removing all data.

If you’re reinstalling Windows on the current system and don’t need a completely clean manual install, the built-in Reset this PC option can be easier. Regardless of the method, make a separate backup before changing partitions or reinstalling.

You don’t need to securely wipe the entire drive unless you’re selling it or trying to prevent old data from being recovered. For a fresh installation, select the correct drive in the Windows installer and delete only the partitions you’re willing to erase. This creates unallocated space for Windows, but everything on those deleted partitions will be lost, so back up anything important first.
