I had a frustrating experience trying to get help with a pair of AirPods. My boyfriend bought them through Amazon using a work gift card, and we purchased AppleCare directly from Apple when we opened them. After only a few uses, the left AirPod stopped working properly, so I visited an Apple Genius Bar.
The employee said AppleCare would not cover the problem because it appeared to be a manufacturing defect rather than accidental damage. He also claimed that Apple's warranty and AppleCare would not apply because the AirPods were purchased through Amazon, and told me to ask Amazon for a return even though its return period had ended. When I questioned this, he insisted there was nothing else Apple could do and asked me to leave.
I later contacted Amazon, and they said Apple should handle the warranty claim. Apple Support then confirmed that both the standard warranty and AppleCare applied, apologized for the confusion, and arranged to send replacement AirPods.
Why might the Genius Bar employee have given me completely different information? Does AppleCare and the standard Apple warranty normally cover Apple products purchased through Amazon, assuming they came from an authorized seller?

This sounds like an employee misunderstanding the policy, possibly made worse when the diagnostic tool failed. A manufacturing defect is generally what the standard warranty is for; AppleCare is not limited only to accidental damage. Asking for a manager would have been reasonable, but the phone-support representative’s resolution confirms that the Genius Bar response was not reliable.
The purchase source alone does not automatically cancel Apple coverage. A product bought from Amazon should normally be covered if it is genuine, eligible, and sold through an authorized channel. However, marketplace listings can involve third-party sellers, and those may not have the same status. That could explain why the employee was being cautious, although he still should have verified the serial number and coverage instead of dismissing you.
Apple’s limited warranty and AppleCare can generally cover products purchased through an authorized third-party retailer, including Amazon. Since Apple Support checked the coverage and arranged a replacement, the store employee was almost certainly mistaken. The important distinction is whether the item was sold directly by Amazon or by an independent marketplace seller. You can also enter the serial number on Apple’s coverage-check page to see how the device is registered.
