Does AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss cover an iPhone bought from an unauthorised retailer?

I'm considering buying a brand-new, sealed iPhone from a reputable retailer that isn't an Apple Authorised Reseller. Apple Support told me I could still add AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, but the UK terms appear to say that covered equipment must be purchased or leased new from Apple or an Apple Authorised Reseller. If I add the plan within the eligibility period, would theft, loss, repairs, and other claims still be covered, or could a claim be rejected because of where the phone was purchased? Has anyone dealt with this situation or found a clear answer?

Being able to add AppleCare+ within the usual eligibility window doesn’t necessarily override the policy terms. The phone may pass the activation or eligibility check, but a theft or loss claim could still require proof of purchase and confirmation that it came from Apple or an authorised reseller. For the least risk, buy from an authorised retailer or get written confirmation that specifically addresses the purchase-source requirement.

That’s what worries me. Support repeatedly said a new, boxed phone from a large online retailer would qualify, but that seems to conflict directly with the UK terms. I’d rather wait for an authorised seller than discover the issue only when making a theft or loss claim.

The device can often be enrolled in AppleCare+ during the first 60 days after activation, and the enrollment system may not ask where it was bought. However, enrollment and claim eligibility are separate things. Standard accidental-damage repairs may be handled differently from theft or loss claims, where the purchase receipt and policy conditions are more likely to be checked. Keep the original receipt and obtain clarification in writing before relying on the coverage.

Exactly—the phone itself doesn’t know whether it came from an authorised seller, but the insurer or Apple can ask for documentation later. The fact that a plan can be added doesn’t necessarily guarantee every claim will be accepted.
