If I buy a brand-new, sealed iPhone from a legitimate but unauthorized retailer, can I still purchase AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss and use the coverage? Apple Support told me that a new device bought online should qualify, but the UK terms appear to say that covered equipment must have been purchased new from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. Has anyone dealt with this, or can clarify which rule applies—especially for theft or loss claims?

Apple generally allows AppleCare+ to be added within 60 days of activating the iPhone, and the device may pass the eligibility check regardless of where it was bought. However, the Theft and Loss portion can be different because a claim may require proof of purchase. Since the written UK terms specifically mention Apple or an Authorized Reseller, buying from an unauthorized retailer could create a problem later even if Apple lets you add the plan initially. For the safest coverage, buy from an authorized seller or get written confirmation that explicitly addresses theft and loss claims.
If you activate the phone yourself, Apple may not ask where it came from when you purchase AppleCare+ during the eligibility window. That does not necessarily override the contract, though. Repair coverage and a theft or loss replacement claim may be handled differently, and the latter is where the original retailer requirement could matter. Keep the original receipt and verify the retailer's status before purchasing; an online store being large or reputable does not automatically make it an Apple Authorized Reseller.
The phone itself cannot identify the seller, but a theft or loss claim could require purchase documentation. So being able to enroll in AppleCare+ is not definitive proof that every benefit will be honored under the policy terms.
