I recently cleaned a large amount of dust from my PC. After putting everything back together, my wired headset stopped producing normal audio and now only gives a faint static sound in the right ear. The headset works normally when connected to my Switch, so the headset itself seems fine. I also updated the audio drivers, but that did not change anything. The problem occurs with the rear motherboard audio jacks, since I need both the headphone and microphone connections and do not normally use the front panel. What could have caused this, and how can I troubleshoot or fix it?

Since this started immediately after cleaning, check that the plugs are in the correct line-out and microphone ports and that neither plug is slightly loose. Also make sure the headset plug is a standard three-pole PC headset connection rather than a single combined phone-style plug. If the jacks were bumped while cleaning, the audio connector or motherboard may have been damaged; a cheap USB audio adapter is a useful workaround and can confirm that the headset itself is fine.
Try another wired headset or pair of 3.5 mm headphones if you can. AirPods only test the PC's digital/Bluetooth audio path, not the analog rear jack. If a second wired device also produces static, the rear audio port may be damaged, dirty, or not making proper contact. Carefully check for dust or debris, make sure both plugs are fully inserted, and test the other rear audio output if your motherboard has one.
The plugs are definitely in the correct rear jacks, and both are seated properly. I’ll try a USB audio adapter or another wired headset to narrow down whether the motherboard port is the problem.
