How can I block ads across my entire home network?

I'm trying to keep advertisements and ad-related tracking from reaching any device on my home Wi‑Fi. I'd prefer a network-wide solution through my router or another local service, rather than installing separate ad-blocking apps or browser extensions on every device. What setup works best, and what limitations should I expect?

You can also configure your router to use a public DNS service that blocks ads, assuming the router allows custom DNS settings. Hosting your own DNS blocker gives you more control, but DNS filtering is not a perfect solution. Services such as video platforms may serve advertisements from the same domains as their normal content, so DNS blocking cannot reliably separate them. Browser-based blockers or device-specific tools may still be needed.

A network-wide DNS blocker such as Pi-hole or AdGuard Home is probably the best starting point. You can run one on a small computer, NAS, or another always-on device, then configure your router or clients to use it for DNS. It will block many known advertising and tracking domains before devices connect to them.

Thanks, I’ll look into running one of those locally.

Be aware that devices can bypass the DNS server you configure by using encrypted DNS or hard-coded DNS addresses. For stricter network-wide enforcement, you can redirect regular DNS traffic to your chosen resolver and block unauthorized DNS and common encrypted-DNS endpoints. That requires a more advanced router configuration and still will not replace browser-level blocking in every situation.

Some routers let you import domain or IP blocklists directly. If yours does not, a local hosts file can block certain domains, though maintaining it manually is inconvenient and incomplete. Ads served from a website’s own servers can bypass this kind of blocking.
