How can I build a foundation in computer hardware for my IT course?

I'm in college studying IT, but I'm already struggling with the basics. We started with identifying computer components, and now we're being asked to compare and rank processors such as the AMD A8-7600, AMD Athlon X4, and Intel Core i5. I don't understand what the model names mean or how to tell which CPU is faster. Could someone recommend beginner-friendly books, videos, or a good way to research these topics? I'm feeling overwhelmed and could really use a clear starting point.

Those are all CPUs, or central processing units. To compare them, look at factors such as the generation, number of cores, clock speed, architecture, and independent benchmark results. The product name alone can be misleading—for example, an older Core i5 may perform differently from a newer or lower-end processor. A CPU comparison site can help you see performance scores, specifications, and release dates in one place.

Also check the exact model number in the assignment. “Core i5” by itself is too broad because Intel has released many different i5 processors over the years.

You don’t need to know everything immediately, but learning how to research is a major part of IT. Try searching one term at a time: what a CPU does, what cores and threads are, what clock speed means, and how benchmarks work. Take notes in your own words, then verify important claims with a textbook, your instructor, or more than one reliable technical source. Beginner computer-hardware videos and introductory A+ certification material can also provide a structured starting point.

Start by talking with your instructor or tutor. They can explain what level of knowledge the course assumes, recommend the required textbook, and show you how to approach the assignment without simply giving you the answer. Asking for help early is much better than waiting until you fall further behind.
