I just accepted a 1D7X1B systems administrator position in the Air Force. I'm starting without an IT background, but I'm excited to learn and want to make the most of the opportunity. I'll probably leave after four years, although I may stay if I enjoy the work. What should I focus on while I'm serving to prepare for a successful civilian sysadmin career?

Remember that you may receive plenty of encouragement to reenlist when your first term is ending. Consider the decision carefully instead of automatically staying or leaving. Either path can work, but make sure you’re building credentials and experience that remain useful outside the military.
Accept early that you’ll never know everything. Technology is too broad for anyone to master completely, so get comfortable asking questions, learning continuously, and being honest about what you don’t understand. That mindset will make the job much easier.
Don’t become so focused on following one procedure that you forget to understand the problem. Policies and security rules matter, but real systems often have several valid solutions, and the best approach can change as circumstances change. Learn the official way to do things while also developing judgment, troubleshooting ability, and creativity.
Use available education and certification benefits aggressively. Follow the training recommendations you receive, work toward a degree, and look into programs that combine college credit with industry certifications. Your military training, certifications, degree, hands-on experience, and security clearance can put you in a strong position for government-contracting or civilian IT jobs later. Learn about AI tools too, but make sure you understand the fundamentals before relying on them for answers.
Take thorough notes whenever someone teaches you something, volunteer for opportunities, and avoid being the person who constantly passes responsibility to someone else. If the Air Force will fund certifications, take advantage of it. Even if you have to pay for some yourself, reputable certifications can still be valuable.
