I'm trying to move into systems administration and previously worked in a semi-junior role where I learned a lot, but I was recently let go and no longer have access to that environment. I still genuinely enjoy sysadmin work and want to keep progressing. What are the best ways to practice and build credible experience at home, especially with Azure or hybrid environments when many cloud services seem tied to employment? I'm open to both cloud and traditional on-premises roles.

You don’t have to focus exclusively on cloud. Older hardware or inexpensive refurbished equipment can support a useful on-premises lab, and the skills transfer well to hybrid roles. Practice setting up services locally, then recreate selected parts in Azure to compare the two approaches.
Azure offers limited free trials and learning environments that are useful for experimenting. You can follow a hybrid-lab project that connects a local virtual machine environment with cloud services, while setting spending limits and deleting resources when you’re finished. Cloud certification labs can also provide a useful project roadmap, even if you don’t pursue the exam immediately.
Work through structured home-lab projects covering fundamentals such as virtualization, networking, identity, Windows or Linux administration, backups, monitoring, and permissions. Document each project with notes, diagrams, and screenshots so you can show how you approached it.
Don’t let job postings asking for experience discourage you. Build a home lab, complete a few practical projects, and be ready to explain what you configured, what went wrong, and how you fixed it. That gives you concrete experience to discuss in interviews even if it wasn’t from a formal job.
I’m open to either path. I have some experience with both, although most of my previous exposure was in cloud environments.
