How can I free up space on a nearly full 200GB C: drive?

My C: drive is almost full even though I've tried keeping applications and games off it. The drive is part of a 1TB NVMe SSD, split into roughly 200GB for C: and 750GB for D:. Some launchers and anti-cheat software still install files on C:, while many games are stored on D: or a 2TB external HDD. I'm trying to avoid buying another drive because hardware prices are high right now. Would switching to Linux help, or are there safer ways to identify and remove whatever is filling C:?

Since the whole SSD is split into C: and D:, you may be able to shrink D: and expand C: using Windows Disk Management or a partition tool, provided there’s enough free space and you have a backup first. Steam can also move installed games between library folders, and other launchers may offer similar options. A 200GB system partition is fairly restrictive for modern Windows installations and game software.

Most games can stay on D:, but launchers, anti-cheat tools, caches, save data, and updates may still put some files on C:.

Start by using WizTree or a similar disk analyzer as administrator. It will show exactly which folders and files are consuming the space, so you can deal with the real cause instead of guessing. Check the Windows folder, user folders, game launchers, restore points, and hidden application data carefully before deleting anything.

Definitely check the Recycle Bin, Downloads, and temporary files too. Those can quietly take up several gigabytes.

You can review System Protection and reduce the space reserved for restore points if they’re unusually large. Moving the page file to D: may also recover some space, but leave a page file somewhere and avoid deleting system files manually. Run Disk Cleanup or Storage settings before using advanced cleanup commands.

If the C: partition keeps filling after cleanup, the long-term fix is giving it more capacity—either by resizing the partition or replacing the SSD with a larger one. More RAM won’t help because RAM and storage are different components.

Changing to Linux probably won’t solve the storage problem. It might save some space, but not enough to make a major difference, and some competitive games or anti-cheat systems may not work properly. First find the largest files and clean Windows temporary data, old updates, and unused applications.
