How Can I Keep Learning Computer Science While Balancing College and a Part-Time Job?

I'm a computer science student with a part-time job, and I try to use my free time to improve my programming skills. The problem is that I often feel unmotivated, procrastinate, or convince myself that I have too many assignments and responsibilities. I've always wanted to build a personal project, but I rarely follow through. I also struggle to retain concepts after exams or breaks, so I often need to relearn material. What should I focus on learning for my future CS career, how can I build a project consistently, and what are some practical ways to balance college, work, and independent study?

Your coursework should be the main priority, especially if you're already struggling with some fundamentals. Instead of trying to learn every new technology, make sure you understand the material from your classes and review it regularly. Short review sessions each week will help more than cramming everything again after a break. Once your schoolwork is under control, choose one small project connected to something you enjoy and work on it in manageable steps.

I'm keeping up with my classes and getting good grades, but I tend to forget a lot once exams or the summer break arrive. I probably need a better review routine so I don't have to start over each time.

Don't wait for a huge block of free time or perfect motivation. Set a small, specific schedule, such as two or three sessions a week lasting 30 minutes. Pick a project that's simple enough to finish, like a command-line tool, a small website, or a script that solves a problem you actually have. Keep the scope narrow, track what you did, and stop when the session ends. Consistency matters more than trying to study for several hours whenever you happen to feel inspired.
