I have Windows installed on an SSD, but I want to use the SSD mainly for the operating system and keep programs, downloads, photos, and other files on my larger hard drive. Right now, many things still end up on the SSD unless I manually choose the hard drive each time. I've already changed the main storage settings, so what else should I configure to make the hard drive the default location without breaking Windows or my applications?

Move your personal libraries too. In File Explorer, right-click folders such as Downloads, Documents, Pictures, and Desktop, open Properties, choose the Location tab, and use Move to put them on the hard drive. For applications and games, select the hard drive during installation whenever the installer allows it.
In Windows, go to Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved. You can set default locations for new apps, documents, music, photos, videos, and other files. This handles most new content, although some applications still use their own storage settings.
There isn’t a completely universal switch that forces every program to avoid the SSD. Windows and third-party software may still keep caches, temporary files, settings, and required components on the system drive. It’s safer to leave Windows and some frequently used system data there rather than changing profile, program, or temporary-folder paths with a script, since that can cause applications or Windows to stop working. Keep the SSD from filling up and choose the hard drive for large installs and files.

I’ve already moved those folders, but I’ll check the individual application settings as well. Thanks.
