I'm learning to code by working through algorithm and data-structure problems. I sometimes ask AI for help, but I'm worried that I'm becoming dependent on it instead of developing my own problem-solving skills. What's a good way to use AI for hints and explanations while still learning to solve problems independently?

Treat AI like training wheels. Type the code yourself, ask what concepts mean, and make sure you can explain every line before moving on. Getting stuck and making mistakes are normal parts of learning, so don’t interpret them as proof that you can’t code.
Start with the tools and ideas you already know, and attempt a simple brute-force solution before looking for something more efficient. If you’re stuck, ask for a narrow hint or for an example using a different problem. After seeing the explanation, put the solution away and reimplement it yourself later.
Change the way you prompt AI. Give it the problem and ask it to guide you with questions, one step at a time, instead of solving it. Ask for a hint only after you explain your current approach. If your code fails, ask it to help you create test cases and understand the mistake. Then close the AI and try to solve a similar problem from memory.
Try working on each problem without assistance first, even if your first attempt is a brute-force solution. If you get stuck, ask for a small hint rather than the full answer. You can also study the relevant data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving fundamentals from a good book or course. The goal is to use AI to speed up learning, not replace the thinking.
