I recently upgraded from an RX 6800 to an RTX 4080 Super. With the RX 6800, 60 FPS initially looked noticeably choppy on my LG E9 55-inch OLED, even though the display runs at 120 Hz. After a lot of testing, I got it looking very smooth by setting the refresh rate to 119.88 Hz instead of 120 Hz and disabling Windows VRR so it would not conflict with driver-level FreeSync.
After switching to the 4080 Super, 60 FPS is choppy again, although not as severely as it was before I fixed the issue on the AMD card. The NVIDIA App and Control Panel only show the display as running at 120 Hz, and disabling Windows VRR no longer seems to change anything. I already used DDU before installing the NVIDIA card, and Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding are enabled.
What NVIDIA or Windows settings should I check to make native 60 FPS look as consistently smooth as it did with my RX 6800? I'm using Windows 11 Pro, a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 32 GB of DDR4-3733 memory, an SN850X NVMe drive, and HDMI 2.1 to the OLED TV. The system firmware and drivers are up to date.

The 4080 Super gives you enough performance to run above 60 FPS in many games, and frame generation can also increase the displayed frame rate when the base rate is around 60. That may be the practical solution, but it does not explain why the same display and 60 FPS target felt smoother with the previous card, so checking frame pacing and the driver’s VRR settings is still worthwhile.
Since you changed GPU vendors, completely removing the AMD driver with DDU in Safe Mode was the right first step. Make sure the NVIDIA driver was then installed cleanly. A leftover driver or display configuration can affect frame pacing, even when the card itself is working normally.
DDU was the first thing I did before installing the 4080 Super. The card has otherwise been working flawlessly.
Check the motherboard settings for Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding. Both should be enabled, and GPU-Z can confirm whether ReBAR is active. These settings are not usually the main cause of 60 FPS judder, but they are worth verifying after a hardware change.
Those settings were already enabled with the RX 6800 and remain enabled. GPU-Z also reports that ReBAR is active.
A 120 Hz television is still the main part of the timing equation. If the display is actually operating at 120 Hz, 60 FPS should technically fit evenly, but inconsistent frame delivery, game-specific pacing, or VRR behavior can still make it look uneven. Try comparing a locked 60 FPS limit with VRR enabled, then with VRR disabled, and use a frame-time graph rather than relying only on the FPS counter.
I’m specifically trying to make 60 FPS smooth because it is the foundation for features such as frame generation. I had already achieved very smooth-looking 60 FPS on this same TV with the RX 6800.
Higher FPS is useful, but I still want the underlying 60 FPS output to be smooth rather than relying on frame generation to hide uneven frame delivery.
