I'm a senior systems engineer on a small team within a large organization, and I've been away on medical leave for the past three months. I'm sure the team had to adapt while I was gone, so I'd like advice on how to catch up, reconnect with everyone, and become effective again without overwhelming myself or disrupting the team. What helped others when returning after an extended absence?

Start with a few short conversations with your manager and teammates. Find out what changed, what work is urgent, and which responsibilities were reassigned while you were away. A simple list of current priorities, upcoming deadlines, and open issues can help you get oriented quickly. You don’t need to solve everything on day one—let the return settle into normal work over the first couple of weeks.
Be kind to yourself and avoid treating the time away like something you need to repay by immediately taking on an impossible workload. Meet with your team, ask what they need from you, and consider having an informal lunch or coffee with them if that feels comfortable. Showing up, listening, and communicating clearly will probably do more for a smooth transition than trying to prove yourself right away.
I recently returned after an extended absence, and there were several things that needed immediate attention. Once I understood what had changed and handled the urgent items, things became routine surprisingly quickly. Schedule time to review major projects, systems, and processes rather than trying to absorb every update at once.

That’s helpful. I do feel guilty about being away and was hoping to find ways to be effective immediately, but taking time to understand what changed before jumping in makes sense.
