I tried installing CDBurnerXP because Windows Media Player was having problems, but the CD-burning program never appeared. Instead, several AVG antivirus shortcuts and applications showed up on my desktop. I assume they were bundled with the installer. Nothing seems to be malfunctioning, but I want to remove AVG and any related extras. Normal uninstalling failed because Windows said the files were open in another program. What is the safest way to clean this up?

If the regular uninstaller says the files are in use, close AVG and any related processes from the system tray and Task Manager, then try again. A reputable third-party removal tool such as Revo Uninstaller can also remove leftover files and shortcuts. Restarting Windows before uninstalling may release whatever is keeping the files open.
CDBurnerXP’s installer may offer AVG as an optional extra with a checkbox to decline it. These offers can be easy to miss, so always read each installation screen instead of choosing the default settings. Also avoid accepting unrelated surveys or requests for personal information during the setup process.
I don’t remember seeing the AVG option, although I did decline a personal survey asking about my age and household. I’ll pay closer attention to those extra offers next time.

I’m trying Revo Uninstaller now. The AVG programs don’t seem harmful, but they are using space and I don’t want them installed.
