I'm planning to build my first PC, but I've seen videos of graphics cards and other components catching fire. I don't have all the parts yet, and the build will be expensive for me, so I want to understand what causes these failures, how likely they are, and what I should do—or avoid doing—to keep the system safe. I'm currently considering an RX 9060 XT.

The main practical precautions are simple: seat the GPU power connector completely, check that it clicks into place, avoid tight bends near the connector, and don’t force the side panel against the cable. With a quality PSU and proper installation, the chance of a fire is extremely low.
If you want to minimize connector-related concerns, you can choose a graphics card that doesn’t use the newer high-power 12V connector. Regardless of the card, good airflow, a reputable PSU, correct cables, and careful cable routing are the important safety steps.
A lot of the widely reported incidents involved newer high-power GPU connectors. Make sure the connector is fully inserted and that the cable is not sharply bent or under sideways pressure right at the plug. Choose a case with enough room behind the graphics card for the cable to run naturally.
I’ve noticed that many of the examples involved Nvidia cards, but I’ll be using an RX 9060 XT.
Use a reputable, high-quality power supply and only use the cables that came with that exact power supply. Modular PSU cables are not universally interchangeable, even if the connectors look identical. Using a cable from another unit can damage components or create a fire hazard.
