I need help installing software on my computer, but I'm worried about giving another person enough access to damage the system or install something malicious. Is there a reasonably safe way to let someone assist remotely while keeping control of my device and minimizing the security risk?

If you don’t fully trust the person, don’t give them remote control. Anyone who can operate your computer may be able to install malware, create a hidden account, change settings, or leave behind remote-access software. There isn’t a reliable way for an inexperienced user to monitor and prevent all of that.

Remote access can make sense for verified company IT or a reputable technician you’ve independently confirmed, but even then you should supervise the session, back up important files first, and remove the remote-support tool afterward. For an unknown person or an unsolicited ‘helper,’ the safest answer is simply not to allow access.

The safest option is to install the software yourself using instructions from a trustworthy source. If you need guidance, use a screen share or video call where they can point out what to click, but keep control of your keyboard and mouse. Be especially cautious of anyone asking you to install TeamViewer, VNC, or similar tools.
