I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon and need to expand the partition that contains my current system. Since the partition is in use, I'm not sure how to unmount it or whether KDE Partition Manager can resize it while the system is running. What is the safest way to do this?

You can’t unmount the root partition while the system is running from it. Boot from a live USB or another Linux installation, then use a partition editor such as GParted or KDE Partition Manager to resize it while it isn’t mounted.
Create or use a bootable Linux USB, start the computer from it, and open its partition-management tool. From that temporary environment, your installed system partition won’t be in use, so you can extend it.
Back up anything important before resizing. Partition changes usually work without problems, but an interruption or unexpected failure could corrupt data. After booting from external media, make sure the partition is unmounted before changing its size.
