I'm 17 and fairly sure my mum can see my text messages, although I'd rather not explain exactly why I suspect it. I'm not very tech-savvy and want to understand how this could be happening and what I can do to prevent it.
I checked my Apple Account and it only shows my three recognised devices. My mum probably doesn't know my passcode, there are no unfamiliar apps on my iPhone, and she hasn't added another Face ID appearance. My family shares Apple services, including storage, and my mum manages the mobile plan and data. I'm unsure whether those arrangements could give her access to my live messages.
Getting a new phone or separate plan isn't realistic for the next few years, so I'm looking for practical steps I can take without stopping using Messages altogether.

Your mobile provider can manage the plan, but that generally doesn’t give them access to the contents of iMessages. Screen Time can show app usage or restrict apps, but it doesn’t normally reveal message text either. If the account and device checks all look normal, consider whether someone who receives your messages might be sharing screenshots or repeating what they read.
Look for the ordinary explanations before assuming spyware. An old iPad, Mac, or iPhone signed into the same Apple Account could still be receiving iMessages. Someone with your passcode could also open the phone, and notification previews might reveal incoming messages while the phone is locked. You can disable previews under Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Previews, and check Face ID and passcode settings carefully.
Family Sharing and shared iCloud storage do not normally let another family member read your iMessages. First clarify whether you each have separate Apple Accounts connected through Family Sharing, or whether everyone is literally signed into the same Apple Account. Sharing one account can cause messages and other data to appear on multiple devices; separate accounts are the safer setup.
Check Settings > Apple Account for every signed-in device, then review Messages > Send & Receive to make sure only your own phone number and email address are listed. Also enable two-factor authentication and change your Apple Account password if someone else might know it.
