How Can I Tell Whether a Lightning Cable Is Genuine?

Someone took the USB-to-Lightning cable from my home, and after I asked for it back, they said a dog had chewed it. I need to return the cable to my workplace, and I still have the original box, iPad, and power adapter. Are there any markings, codes, or other reliable ways to identify whether a replacement Lightning cable is the original Apple cable rather than a convincing imitation?

Lightning cables generally aren’t individually serialized, so there usually isn’t a unique code that can prove a particular cable is the exact one you had. You can check the cable for the usual Apple markings and build quality, but those details aren’t always enough to distinguish a genuine cable from a high-quality imitation.

That’s what I was worried about. I mainly need to return something reliable because it originally belonged to my workplace.

Look for the certification and construction details recommended by Apple, such as the markings near the Lightning connector, the finish of the contacts, and the shape and quality of the connector. These checks can help identify obvious fakes, but they still may not establish that it is the exact original cable.

The practical solution is to buy a reputable replacement and keep the receipt. Choose one that supports both charging and data transfer, since some inexpensive cables only charge. You could provide the replacement and receipt rather than trying to prove which physical cable was originally yours.
