Is upgrading my RAM mainly necessary when system usage frequently reaches close to 100%? I currently have 16 GB, and the games I play generally run well, although I sometimes notice brief stutters. These spikes only happen once or twice a day and usually last a moment, so I'm unsure whether moving to 32 GB would provide a meaningful benefit or if I should wait.

RAM usage nearing 100% is one sign, but the important part is what happens at the same time. When the system runs out of available memory and starts relying heavily on the page file, you may see stutters, slow application switching, or major performance drops. If your games are otherwise smooth, 16 GB may still be sufficient for your current use.
There isn’t a universal amount everyone needs. The operating system, games, mods, browser tabs, and other software all matter. If you’re only seeing a momentary spike once or twice daily and no consistent slowdowns, upgrading probably won’t make a dramatic difference right now. Monitor whether the stutters correlate with memory exhaustion before buying more.
Unused RAM isn’t automatically wasted, since the operating system uses spare memory for caching. The better indicators are sustained high usage, noticeable paging, hitching, or applications struggling when several things are open. For gaming, 16 GB remains workable in many cases, while 32 GB gives more headroom for newer games, browsers, and background programs.

The spikes are only occasional and brief, so it sounds like I can probably hold off unless they become more frequent or start affecting performance noticeably.
