I recently bought a second-hand Ryzen 7 7800X3D and want to confirm that it is not dead on arrival before my two-day return window expires. I already have an MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi6E motherboard, a Radeon RX 9070 XT, and an 850W power supply. The parts should be compatible, but I need to test the CPU itself. I do not have a desktop monitor yet, although I do have a laptop. What components do I need to assemble for a basic test, and is there any way to use the laptop as a display?

PC compatibility tools can confirm that the listed parts work together, and an 850W supply is plenty for this setup. However, they cannot detect a defective used CPU. The practical test is to build the system with RAM and a display, enter BIOS, and then run a stability test once the operating system is installed.
You need to actually assemble a minimal working system: install the CPU and cooler, one or two sticks of compatible DDR5 RAM, the motherboard, power supply, and GPU if you use the GPU's video output. Then connect a normal monitor and try to reach the BIOS. Storage is not required just to check whether it POSTs. The 7800X3D has basic integrated graphics, but the motherboard must provide a usable video output for that, and a laptop's HDMI port is almost always output-only, so it generally cannot be used as a monitor.
Make sure the motherboard BIOS supports the 7800X3D; a B850 board should support it, but checking the manufacturer's CPU support list is still worthwhile. Install the cooler before powering it on, connect the 24-pin motherboard and CPU power cables, and use the board's diagnostic LEDs if it fails to POST. A BIOS screen is a good sign, though it does not completely guarantee the CPU is flawless under load.
