How can I troubleshoot DVD ripping errors and freezes?

I'm trying to back up my DVD collection before moving abroad, but I'm running into repeated problems. WinX DVD Ripper Platinum stops with "Abnormal Termination Error Code 1," even after changing some settings. Another DVD-ripping application worked a few times but now freezes at about 50% while analyzing the disc. I'm using a Rioddas external DVD drive. What should I check or try to get the discs ripped successfully?

A lot of people use MakeMKV for this because it handles DVD structure and copy protection better than many basic rippers. It has a trial or beta mode, and if it works well for you, there’s a paid registration option later.

Does the trial or beta version limit how long a video can be, or how much of a disc it can extract?

Start by checking the physical discs. Clean them gently from the center outward rather than wiping in a circle, and look for scratches. Errors during analysis often come from the drive struggling to read a damaged disc. If these are recordable DVD-R or DVD-RW discs, they may have degraded over time and some files might no longer be recoverable.

Also try a different disc and, if possible, another optical drive or USB port. If several programs freeze at the same point on one disc, the disc itself is more likely the problem than the ripping software.
