Networking matters a lot, especially when the junior market is crowded. Talk with professors, alumni, and people working in technology, and be open to adjacent roles such as systems administration, systems engineering, or technical support. Your first job does not have to be your final specialty.
The market is tougher for new graduates than it was a few years ago, but that does not mean there are no jobs. Some schools report that most graduates still find work in their field within a year, while the percentage actively searching is higher than it used to be. AI changes how developers work, but companies still need people who can understand requirements, make sound technical decisions, test systems, and take responsibility for the result.
The degree helps, but employers usually want evidence that you can build and maintain real things. Create a portfolio, work on personal or volunteer projects, contribute to practical applications, and consider entry-level support or operations roles to get industry experience. A home lab can also show initiative if you document what you built and learned.
Web development is still a valid path, but it is one of the most crowded entry-level areas. Look at job listings in your region and identify the technologies employers repeatedly request instead of only learning whatever is most popular online. Backend development, cloud infrastructure, security, data, and enterprise technologies may offer additional options.
A portfolio can matter more than the degree once you have some professional experience. Freelancing or helping nonprofits can provide real projects, references, and examples of working with actual users and constraints.
