I recently switched my laptop to Linux Mint with the i3 desktop environment and I'm considering doing the same on my desktop, which has an NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti. I've heard NVIDIA hardware can be troublesome on Linux, so I'm wondering whether setting it up is just mildly inconvenient or if I should expect serious compatibility problems. I'm currently considering Pop!_OS or Kubuntu.

On Linux Mint, the setup is usually straightforward. Open Driver Manager from the start menu, select the recommended NVIDIA driver, let it install, and reboot. After that, the card should work normally.
Kubuntu is a solid choice if you want something predictable and low-maintenance. It tends to be pleasantly uneventful, and NVIDIA setup should be manageable through the included driver tools.
A 2080 has worked well for many people on Linux, and the 3080 Ti should be in an even better position. Older cards, especially pre-10-series models, are more likely to lack features or need workarounds; that shouldn’t be a concern with your hardware.
Modern NVIDIA drivers are generally fine for everyday Linux use. The situation was rougher a few years ago, but an RTX 3080 Ti should be well supported. Unless you have specialized graphics or compute requirements, you probably won’t run into anything major.
